No Surgery for Marquise Brown

Chiefs WR Marquise Brown doesn't need surgery on the shoulder he dislocated in Saturday night's preseason opener. He was released from the hospital the next day and is back in Kansas City with the team.

What They're Saying

HC Andy Reid: "They were able to get the joint back into place without surgery, which is a positive. Then we'll just see on the recovery. He is back in Kansas City now. He stayed over in Jacksonville until they got that thing situated."

Reid on whether Brown might return for the regular-season opener: "We'll see how that goes."

2024 Fantasy Football Impact

Avoiding surgery on the joint certainly can't hurt Brown's return timeline. That Reid isn't even calling Brown unlikely for the Sept. 5 opener right now seems like a positive as well.

Of course -- like his coach says -- we'll have to see how Brown progresses from here and continually evaluate his chances of helping our fantasy football teams early in the year.

As we passed along previously, Reid said the injury is similar to one WR Tyreek Hill suffered in 2019 while with the Chiefs. That Week 1 injury cost Hill four games in successive weeks.

Four weeks from Brown's injury date (Aug. 10) would be Sept. 7, two days after Kansas City opens against the Ravens.

Rankings Movement

We knocked a game off Brown's projections in the wake of the injury. That doesn't change his overall ranking too much. It could hurt him a bit more in keeper rankings, however, when you're narrowing down to just a few players to roll over.

Injury History: New Developments & Historical Context

Like Brown, Hill did not require surgery for his aforementioned 2019 sternoclavicular joint injury.

Hill's return timeline back then was reported as 4-6 weeks.
